Our Story

Home

It was one o'clock in the morning at Printer's Alley in Nashville, Tennessee. We had worked up an appetite after all the drinking and dancing we did at the local honkytonks. So naturally, we stopped for some hot dogs – “street meat” as we like to call it. When we finally finished eating and wiped the mustard from our fingertips, we looked up and found a sign that read “Custom Poems.” This sign was sitting atop a table, in front of a Smith Corona typewriter. Behind the typewriter was a man with wispy brown hair, a handlebar mustache, wearing suspenders and bright red pants. His name was Elderberry Young.

We struck up a conversation with him and asked what kind of poems he writes for people. He said he writes about whatever they want: love, loss, friendship, dogs, etc. With twinkles in our eyes and curiosity in our hearts, we asked him to write one about us. We gave him the whole spiel about us being newly engaged and getting married in 2024. Before crafting our custom poem, he pulled each of us aside to cross-examine us about our relationship. How did you meet? What is your favorite quality about him/her? When did you know he/she was the one?

It's difficult to put into words how much you love someone. Or to recount a love story so grand. You fear you won't do it justice. But this poem comes pretty darn close! This is Our Story as written by Elderberry Young.

I was searching cyberspace
at the end of a tether
about to delete the app
when you popped front and center
i took a chance and met with you
you showed up in cowboy boots
and even through that mustache
I could tell you were cute
we talked and talked and talked and talked
and found that we shared values
and I just felt so comfortable
and safe to be around you
and standing there
frying pan in hand
cooking my family dinner
I just knew right there and then
that I had found a winner
I remember when we drank too much
and you got in need of help
twas in that sickly state
that my heart just melt
to see you from so many sides
and to love them truly
I knew one day you'd be my bride
and shivers ran right through me
you're the sweetest angel babe
I've never felt so loved
and the way we work it out
and talk when times get tough
laying on our mattress
looking in your eyes
seeing that you see and hear
and listen to my side
our communication is an occassion
to be held and it's just an amazing
gift I've never had with anyone else
my family adores you
and I adore you too
and I said yes with such a zest
when you asked if I'd say I do
I can see the future glowing in your eyes
and all our little children
gathered by our side
I wanna be your husband I wanna be your bride
